Statement del Cpt. Charles W. Greffet Operation Officer datato 13 marzo 1945: "On the night of 11 March 1945, Capt. Gilman L. Leist, ASN. 0-662955, Pilot; S/Sgt Anthony J. Montemorra, ASN. 31294463, Gunner, and Sgt John E. Fitzgerald, ASN. 17077071, Gunner were scheduled on a Night Intruder Mission in aircraft no. 43-9620. Capt Leist took off at 2102 hours on a flight of three hours duration, although his airman carried a sufficient supply of fuel for a six hour flight. No word was received either through the Tower or through Sector Control concerning his whereabouts after Take-off. The aircraft and crew members are considered Missing In Action."

Statement del Sgt. John. E. Fitzgerald datato 26 aprile 1945 dopo il rilascio dalla prigionia: "KNOWN INFORMATION: While bombing a bridge near Parma, Italy, our second bomb run for reasons unknown to me, the plane first hit a tree and then the bridge. It came to rest to about 100 yards past the bridge breaking into eight pieces . The pilot was killed, and I saw his body in the wreckage. The turret gunner and I returned to base together."

Notiziario GNR datato 25 marzo 1945: "Dall'Emilia, Parma. Nella notte dell'11 corrente, nei pressi di Parma, un ricognitore notturno, dopo aver lanciato razzi luminosi e spezzonato alcune località in riva al torrente Taro, volando a bassissima quota sbatteva contro un albero e precipitava nel greto del torrente, incendiandosi. I quattro uomini componenti l'equipaggio decedevano."

La dichiarazione del mitragliere John E. Fitzgerald e' molto esaustiva nel riportarci le cause della perdita dell'A-20, che cadde a causa di un errore del pilota. In contrasto con quanto riportato dalla Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana, Leist fu il solo deceduto nel crash, in quanto i due sergenti mitraglieri riuscirono a sopravvivere e furono tratti in salvo dalla 31ma. Report della Missione OSS-OG CAYUGA, operante in Provincia di Parma, inerente il salvataggio dei Sgt. Montemorra e Fitzgerald effettuato da una squadra della 31ma Brigata Garibaldi “Forni”, operante nell'area di Fornovo-Salsomaggiore: “14 March – 31st Brigade partisans picked up crew of A-20 plane; Captain Liest (pilot) was killed in crash. S Sgt. Gontemora and Sgt Fitzgerald injured and taken care of by partisans and turned over to POW mission” .
