Statement del Cpt. William M. Sittman W. Operation Officer datato 20 aprile 1945: "On the night of 16-17 April 1945, at approximately 00,20 hours, 1st Lt. Lloyd W. Stall, 0-758389, Pilot; S/Sgt. Charles S. Mattes, 33103058, Bomb. Nav; S/Sgt. Leroy B. Schmale, 33622246, gunner and S/Sgt. Walter W. Stewart, 13027781, gunner, took off in airplane 41-3253 (59) from Grossetto A/D, to attack a Po River Crossing, in the area of Casalmaggiore, Italy. The airplane failed to return. The pilot checked in with 'Rhubarb' Sector Controller, E. of Forli A/D at 00,54 hours. At 01,17 hours, a fix was taken on the airplane by 'Rhubarb' end the plane was going north at L-5458. No further contact was made with the pilot or crew."

Non sono giunte fino a noi testimonianze o documenti utili a far luce su quanto accadde all’A-20. Dichiarato disperso dopo l’ultimo contatto avvenuto alle ore 1,17, ne vennero ritrovati i resti alle pendici del Monte Montagnana, nell’Appennino Parmense. I quattro aviatori deceduti erano stati sepolti presso il cimitero di Miano di Corniglio. Furono riesumati il 23 Luglio 1945 e traslati negli Stati Uniti.
